What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic or distressing memories. When we experience something overwhelming, the memory can get "stuck" and continue to trigger strong emotional and physical reactions long after the event has passed.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, but also tapping or sounds) while you recall distressing memories. This process helps the brain reprocess these memories so they become less vivid, less distressing, and feel more like normal memories from the past rather than something happening now.

What Can EMDR Help With?

  • Trauma and PTSD - Single incident trauma or complex, repeated trauma
  • Disturbing memories - Events that continue to intrude on your thoughts
  • Anxiety - Especially when linked to specific past experiences
  • Phobias - Fears with roots in past experiences
  • Grief - Processing loss and complicated grief reactions
  • Performance anxiety - When past failures affect current confidence
  • Negative self-beliefs - Deep-seated beliefs formed from difficult experiences

How EMDR Works

EMDR follows a structured eight-phase approach:

1. History Taking

We discuss your history and identify memories that may be contributing to current difficulties.

2. Preparation

I explain the EMDR process and teach you techniques to manage any distress that may arise during or between sessions.

3. Assessment

We identify specific memories to target and the negative beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations associated with them.

4-7. Processing

Using bilateral stimulation, we work through the targeted memories, allowing your brain to reprocess them naturally.

8. Evaluation

We review progress and address any remaining aspects of the memories.

What to Expect

EMDR can produce results more quickly than traditional talk therapy for certain issues. Some people notice significant shifts after just a few sessions, while more complex trauma may require longer treatment.

During processing, you remain fully conscious and in control. You may experience intense emotions briefly as memories are processed, but most people find the distress decreases significantly by the end of each session.
