Understanding Depression

Depression is more than feeling sad. It can manifest as persistent emptiness, loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix, or a heaviness that makes everyday tasks feel insurmountable. Sometimes it shows up as irritability, difficulty concentrating, or physical symptoms like changes in appetite or sleep.

Depression can develop gradually or be triggered by life events: loss, major transitions, chronic stress, or feeling disconnected from what gives your life meaning. For those living abroad, isolation, cultural displacement, and the loss of familiar support systems can contribute to depressive episodes.

Signs That Therapy Might Help

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
  • Significant changes in sleep patterns (too much or too little)
  • Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Withdrawal from social connections and relationships
  • Physical symptoms without clear medical cause
"Chronic loneliness is associated with a 26-32% increased risk of mortality, comparable to smoking and obesity."

My Approach to Depression

I work with depression using approaches that address both immediate symptoms and underlying patterns:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify and change thought patterns that maintain depression. We'll work on breaking cycles of negative thinking and gradually rebuilding engagement with life.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

Focusing on relationships and social roles that may have shifted, IPT addresses the interpersonal context of depression, including grief, role transitions, and relationship difficulties.

Schema Therapy

When depression connects to deeper life patterns and early experiences, Schema Therapy helps understand and address these underlying themes.

Behavioral Activation

Depression often leads to withdrawal, which deepens depression. Behavioral activation involves gradually increasing engagement with meaningful activities, even when motivation is low.

What to Expect

Therapy for depression begins with understanding your experience: how the depression developed, what maintains it, and what you want your life to look like. We work at a pace that respects where you are while gently challenging the patterns that keep you stuck.

Recovery from depression isn't linear, but most people begin to notice shifts within the first few months of consistent therapy. The goal isn't just to feel less bad, but to reconnect with what matters to you.
