Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Building awareness and grounding techniques for managing overwhelming moments: learning to be present without being overwhelmed.
What is Mindfulness-Based Therapy?
Mindfulness-Based Therapy integrates mindfulness practices with psychological treatment. At its core, mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment, noticing what's happening in your mind and body without getting swept away by it.
This isn't about emptying your mind or achieving a state of calm. It's about developing a different relationship with your thoughts and feelings, one where you can observe them, acknowledge them, and respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.
Why Mindfulness in Therapy?
Much of our distress comes from being caught up in thoughts about the past (rumination) or the future (worry). We can spend hours mentally replaying difficult conversations or catastrophizing about what might go wrong, and our bodies react as if these imagined scenarios are happening right now.
Mindfulness offers a way out of this cycle. By learning to anchor yourself in the present moment, you create space between a trigger and your response. You begin to notice thoughts as thoughts, rather than facts that demand immediate action.
Key Skills We Develop
Present-Moment Awareness
Learning to notice when your mind has wandered to the past or future, and gently bringing attention back to now. This sounds simple but requires practice. It's remarkably effective at reducing anxiety and rumination.
Grounding Techniques
Practical tools for moments when you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or dissociated. These might involve focusing on physical sensations, breath, or your immediate environment to bring yourself back to the present.
Non-Judgmental Observation
Learning to notice your experiences without automatically labeling them as good or bad. This reduces the secondary suffering that comes from fighting against or judging our own feelings.
Responding vs. Reacting
Creating space to choose your response rather than acting on autopilot. This is particularly valuable for managing difficult emotions, impulses, or interpersonal conflicts.
What Mindfulness-Based Approaches Help With
- Anxiety - Breaking cycles of worry and physical tension
- Stress - Building capacity to manage pressure without burning out
- Recurring depression - Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is specifically designed to prevent depressive relapse
- Emotional regulation - Managing intense emotions without being overwhelmed
- Overthinking - Reducing rumination and mental spinning
- Sleep difficulties - Calming an overactive mind at bedtime
- Chronic pain - Changing your relationship with pain sensations
What Sessions Look Like
I integrate mindfulness techniques into therapy rather than offering standalone mindfulness courses. This means we might:
- Practice brief mindfulness exercises together in session
- Use mindfulness to explore what you're experiencing in the moment
- Develop personalized grounding techniques for specific situations
- Work on applying mindfulness to your particular challenges
- Address any obstacles that come up in your practice
You don't need any prior meditation experience. We start where you are and build skills gradually. The goal isn't to become a meditator. It's to develop practical tools you can use in daily life.
Is Mindfulness Right for You?
Mindfulness-based approaches work well for people who are willing to practice regularly, even briefly. The skills develop through repetition, not just understanding. If you're open to trying something experiential rather than purely talking-based, these approaches can be powerful.
That said, mindfulness isn't always the right starting point. If you're dealing with acute trauma or severe dissociation, we might need to build some stability first before introducing mindfulness practices. We'll find what works for your situation.
